Autumn Home Maintenance Checklist: Sealing It Up
Autumn Home Maintenance > Securing Your Home
In this series of posts, we’ve covered some of the important home maintenance checklist that every homeowner should complete. Gearing up for storms, ice, and snow requires some thorough preparation, which we’ve covered in our post regarding tree care and gutter cleaning. In this blog, we’ll cover how to seal up your home for the fall. Next, secure your investment against the coming weather perils with a comprehensive Dayville Home Insurance policy.
Seal windows and doors.
This Old House says to seal gaps larger than ⅛ inch around windows and doors to cut your winter heating bill by up to 15 percent. On windows, press adhesive-backed closed-cell foam onto the bottom of the sash. Secure a loose sash by applying a strip of plastic V-channel weatherstripping in the groove the sash slides in, securing it with finish nails. Use foam strips on the sides and tops of doors, and install a door sweep on the bottom.
Seal up any cracks.
Inspect your driveway and walkway for any cracks in the concrete. In freezing temperatures, these cracks are bound to fill with water, causing a slip hazard. Simply fill the cracks with caulking and smooth the surface with a putty knife. For larger cracks, trowel on a vinyl concrete patching compound, and let it cure one day before walking on it, three days before driving over it.
Inspect the attic.
This is a huge concern during fall and winter months, especially when it comes to water leaks and critter invasions. Use closed-cell polyurethane foam to fill in gaps in insulation and sheathing. Next, fill small cracks with sealant. If there’s a larger hole, it’s best to call a professional repairman.
