Motorcycle Safety for Spring Riding

Everybody loves spring, but few people love it as much as motorcycle enthusiasts do. In addition to the sunnier skies and warmer weather that arrives, spring brings the opportunity to get back on your bike and traverse the open highway. You’ve probably spent the winter months itching to take a ride, and now that spring is here, you can. Before you do so, though, there are a few safety tips for motorcycle riders that you should brush up on. If you’re wondering how do I prepare my motorcycle for the spring, consider the following four safety pointers before you get back on the bike.

Check for Animals

Animals love to hide in warm places, and unfortunately, that prompts some of them to hide in the crevices of your bike. You should always inspect your bike thoroughly before riding it — especially if it’s been in storage for a while. Pay special attention to your exhaust pipe. It’s not unusual for mice, rats, and other rodents to hide in there. You should also detach the seat of your bike and ensure that there aren’t any curious critters trying to hitch a ride in there.

Read Your Manual

It’s probably only been a few months since you last rode your bike, but a safety refresher is still a good idea. One of the best ways to refresh your knowledge is to do a quick review of your bike’s safety manual. You might be surprised by some of the information you’re reminded of.

Take a Safety Course

The only thing better than reading about safety is practicing it. If you live near a motorcycle center, you’re probably within close proximity to a safety course. Before you head back on the road this spring, you should enroll in a class and renew your commitment to safety.

Wear a Helmet

Of course, one of the most important elements of motorcycle safety is wearing the right helmet. Motorcycle helmets are not a one-size-fits-all product, so you should be sure that yours is fitted correctly. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, you should measure the width of your head and assess its shape, too, in order to find the ideal helmet size. The helmet should be snug but comfortable.

Always Be Safe

Yet another important component of motorcyclist safety is finding the right motorcycle insurance. Carrying the right coverage is one of the most important protections you can have, and motorcycle insurance is required in most states. In addition to covering medical bills and other expenses related to an accident, your policy can cover property damage to your bike, including vandalism and other incidents that can be costly to repair. Make sure you’re riding safely by finding a policy that provides coverage when you’re on the road.
