New London Auto Insurance: Check-Ups & Maintenance by the Miles
There are a lot of auto maintenance checklists out there. Automotive dealers, manufacturers and mechanics tend to recommend a lot of mileage based car checkups.
Oil change. Over the last few years, manufacturers have been easing up on their traditional 3,000 mile recommendation. The number is based on older, less efficient oil that was used decades ago- today’s vehicle doesn’t need it to be changed quite so often. Instead, you should change your oil every 5,000-7,000 miles.
However, on that note, if you drive in a busy urban area that includes a lot of slowing or stopping- such as in brutal LA traffic, you may want to change it more often. Changing speeds frequently can put more strain on the engine and use up more oil.
Scheduled servicing. Check your owner’s manual on this one- every car has a different maintenance schedule.
- 15,000 miles. The general benchmark for the first area of service, it shouldn’t be too much work. An oil change, air filter, tire rotation and inspection of key parts should all be covered.
- 30,000 miles. In addition to the 15,000 mile check up, the 30,000 mile checkup includes new fuel filter, transmission fluid, and a more thorough inspection.
- 60,000 miles. At 60,000 miles you’ll want to replace all belts, hoses and valves that are wearing thin. You could switch out the spark plugs as now.
- 100,000 miles. Time for the ultimate checkup. And, if your vehicle is still running smooth at 100,000, you’ve done quite well for yourself.
