Chevrolet is set to release their latest Corvette model which will offer owners a new way to protect their “baby” when they drop it off with the valet at their favorite restaurant or lend it to their friends and family for a test drive around town. Chevy calls it “valet mode.” When enabled, the Corvette’s valet mode, technology in the car will automatically lock the interior storage areas, disable the infotainment system, and record video, audio and vehicle data while owners are away from their vehicle. Activated by a four-digit password of the owner’s choosing, the Performance Data Recorder (PDR) system can also capture the car’s speed, the engine RPM, gear position and g-force when the valet mode is initiated.

The system was originally designed for car racing enthusiasts who wanted to monitor their performance on amateur race tracks, but Chevrolet later realized that the technology could have more widespread benefits for consumers. To acquire the performance data, the system utilizes a high-definition camera shrewdly hidden in the trim of the windshield header to record video from the driver’s perspective and a dedicated microphone in the cabin to capture the audio. According to a Chevy, a self-contained telemetry recorder uses a GPS receiver built into the vehicle controls to access vehicle information. The data is collected and stored on a memory chip affixed into the glove box which can also transfer the data. The system can store up to 200 minutes of drive time on a single SD-card, and owners can access that information the car’s 8-inch touch screen or download it to a computer.

They system has been likened to a baby monitor for the car by Chevy officials in their press release. The motor producers hope the new system will allow owners to see first-hand exactly happened to their cars after they turned over the keys and better protect their vehicles.
