What to Bring to Your College Apartment
So it’s time for your first college apartment. First, congratulations on embarking on this journey! Now that fall semester is almost upon us, you must be in the know about what items you’ll need to start it off right and be prepared for the coming year. Here’s what to have so your living arrangement can help you have a successful semester.
The Bedroom
A laptop is probably one of the most important item to have in order to succeed in your college career. You’ll submit online quizzes, store research papers, take notes, and binge watch your favorite Netflix series on all your laptop. Create good study habits from the start with a desk that is clean, organized, and fully stocked with school supplies.
You’ll also need some sort of futon or lounge chair to kick back in after a stressful class or study meetup. Having a space designated for relaxation can really help. This should be your personal sanctuary spot to ease your mind and body, where you can enjoy leisure reading, drawing, or catching up on your favorite shows.
The Bathroom
Whether you’re lucky enough to have your own bathroom or sharing with a roommate, you’ll need a storage cart for your toiletries. Most bathrooms in college housing lack sufficient cabinet bathroom storage space.
A rug or two in the bathroom is another must. Rugs are not only comforting on the feet, but also needed to avoid slipping when you get out of the shower.
You will also need a shower curtain and shower liner. Make sure to get the right size to prevent water from leaking out of the shower.
Lastly, don’t forget about cleaning! Make sure you have a toilet brush, bathroom surface cleaner, and a toilet plunger ready to go. You don’t want to wait until you really need these to buy them. A well-maintained bathroom will help to keep your apartment feeling fresh, and your guests and roommates will appreciate it.
The Living Room
You will definitely want a TV in your living room. As a college student you probably won’t have much money for other forms of entertainment and will want to veg out after a long day or week of classes. A small TV is really all you need, and allows you to host movie nights or play video games with friends. Even without a cable hookup, you’ll still be able to enjoy the use of your television.
It’s also recommended to have some seating in your living room, like a sofa or some comfortable chairs. These will be great if you have company, and will give you somewhere else to read, study, work, or relax other than your bedroom.
The Kitchen
First and foremost, you’ll need a coffee maker. Before morning classes you’ll most likely want to brew a fresh cup as the first thing you do when you get out of bed. This will help start your day and keep your energy up for long lectures.
If you’re moving in with a roommate, you should figure out who will bring what, in terms of cookware and eating essentials. You will need to be equipped with pots, pans, plates, utensils, and more. These items can easily be found at affordable prices. Eating out every meal will not last on a typical college budget. A slow cooker is a great tool for college students: you can put your ingredients in in the morning, and when you get home after a long day of classes, work, and other activities, you’ll be greeted with an aromatic apartment and dinner waiting for you!
Renters Insurance
In a campus apartment or a college town, landlords may not require renters insurance. However, it’s always a good idea to have renters insurance coverage to safeguard your personal possessions as well as providing liability coverage and coverage for additional living expenses. Here are Byrnes Agency, we offer a special renters insurance policy for college students. We know that college students can have limited budgets and different liabilities, and we want to make sure that these students can still have the protection they need while getting their education.
