What You Should and Should Not Compromise on When Renting
Renters have a lot to think about when they’re looking for a great place to live. When lining up a handful of places to consider calling home there are a number of things to keep in mind and weigh out when it’s time to pick a spot. Finding an apartment that lines up with your budget and includes the amenities that you want can be hard to find, especially when you have strict expectations.
With this in mind, it’s important to know that some compromises will have to be made. Really looking forward to finding a place with a patio, free Wi-Fi, and is dog-friendly? You may have to cut ties with one of those. According to a survey by Apartment Guide, two-thirds of renters in the U.S. say they feel they have to sacrifice at least a few things they were really hoping for to stay within their budget.
When searching for a rental, it’s important to weigh out what you need and what is optional, and know what your next move is. Here are some compromises that people should be making and some that shouldn’t be made.
Housing Type: Don’t Budge
Housing type really isn’t a big compromise that people usually make, and depending on what you’re really hoping for in a home, it doesn’t have to be. If you have your heart set on a single-family home then it wouldn’t hurt to stick with this course of action and take the time to find the one you want instead of feeling you have to be cooped up in an apartment.
Location: Stick to Your Limits
Location is a key component for every renter and is usually something that shouldn’t be looked at lightly. The reason why people choose the area they want to be in usually has to do with another part of their life, like proximity to work, school, children’s school, family, etc. If you compromise this part, you’re literally pushing yourself further away from the important factors of your day-to-day life. While there is some leeway that can be made, maybe by a few miles or so, it’s best to stick within a certain boundary limit so you’re not making life harder in some way.
Price: Compromise if You Can, but Keep Your Budget
If you have more flexibility in your overall budget then giving up some wiggle room on the monthly price isn’t an issue. But if you have strict parameters for what you’re able to pay month in and month out, then this may not be an area where you can make a compromise. You should plan to have a window of what you can afford each month and also factor in things like utilities, Wi-Fi, and local renters insurance options to protect your home and what’s inside it.
In fact, renters insurance CT is something that should not be cut as it protects you in the event of theft or fire, which can happen at any time. Consider all that you may need to pay for every month and give yourself a feasible window to work with, financially speaking.
Amenities: Be Flexible for Non-Necessities
Yes, an in-house gym or entertainment room sound great, but do you really need them? What about a bottom floor coffee shop or dry cleaners? Are they necessities? If you have your eye on amenities, you may be restricting your options altogether. Amenities are nice things to have, but you should really start with the basics and go from there. Air conditioning, in-unit washer and dryer, and basic appliances can be looked at as an amenities starter kit, and then everything else can be optional, such as patios, pool views, and proximity to local entertainment.
