Windham County Auto Insurance: How Will Driverless Cars Affect Us?
In a previous post entitled “The Cost of Distracted Driving”, we mentioned how you could discourage distracted driving amongst your family. As reported by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), about half of all auto collisions are caused by some form of distracted driving. Aside from talking about it with your family, co-workers, friends, etc. is there really a way to reduce the risks of these types of collisions? According to some experts, autonomous or driverless, cars are the solution.
To many people, driverless cars may seem like something out of a science fiction movie, not something that could become a reality. However, these vehicles are expected to be available to the general public by 2018, and some even believe that they can completely take over the roads by 2040. States such as New York, California, and Nevada are already taking steps to start testing these cars on their roadways.
What does all of this mean for drivers? A 2010 NHTSA survey found that adding these vehicles to the road could mitigate up to 81% of vehicle crashes. Not only does this mean our roads will be safer for us and those around us, but insurers will be paying less to attorneys, hospitals, etc. Which in theory, should mean that drivers will discover that they save money on premiums.
Until this technology becomes truly road-tested and is allowed to interact with human beings, the impact that they will have on safety, insurance, and legal issues such as who is at fault in a collision is unknown. So, in the meantime, it’s imperative that you have the right Windham County Auto Insurance policy to protect yourself financially.
